You can currently pick up a 1994 Audi Cabriolet on Auto Trader for £2,295, but if you head to Cheffins auctioneers in Cambridgeshire, expect to pay up to £80,000 for the same car.
It’s all to do with one of the vehicle’s former lady owners who was one of the most famous women in the world: Diana, Princess of Wales.
The late Princess was regularly snapped behind the wheel by photographers, with the two Princes in the back seat, as she drove the car on daily duties, clocking up a total 4,000 miles. This royal provenance has elevated its price tag by almost 4o times.
Luke Macdonald, Cheffins fine art director, said, “The owner is a car collector who lives in Jersey. In fact he drove the car over to us himself three weeks ago.
“It has only 21,000 recorded miles from new and of course comes with press photos of the time.”
The Audi, which has an estimate of £60,000 to £80,000, is set to be sold in Cheffins’ Connoisseur Sale, taking place on July 6.
