The auction house said that the seller had no idea that the jewellery even existed until their mother passed away and the items were found in a drawer. It was only after they contacted the Derbyshire-based auctioneers for a valuation that they discovered the age of the pieces.

The collection of over twenty lots includes a Georgian silver and paste drop brooch in the shape of a dove, an 18th Century Spanish/Portuguese diamond and gold pendant and a Victorian gold and enamel memorial bracelet with a woven hair panel. It is expected to make upwards of £3,000 in the sale on July 16 and 17.

Irita Marriott, owner of the auction house responsible for the sale, said: “This collection was a real hidden treasure trove! The seller was so surprised to find the jewellery, they had never seen their mother wear any of it and didn’t even know it existed. There are some really unusual pieces which are going to attract a lot of interest.”
