A rare and unusual escritoire recently sold for over four times the top estimate at Chorley’s two-day sale at Prinknash Abbey in Gloucestershire, fetching almost £24,000 (including buyer’s premium and VAT).
As a highly decorated item of furniture, featuring the use of rosewood, kingwood, purpleheart and walnut, the piece has hardstone medallions, including a central oval panel of Egyptian green porphry.
While the ‘skin’ of the escritoire remains intact and the piece is in good condition, it does require some work to replace missing gilt gesso mouldings.
The item was bought by Craig Carrington, a Cotswold-based dealer in English and Continental furniture and art. He is planning to take the escritoire to the LAPADA Art & Antiques Fair in Berkeley Square, London from 23rd to 27th September.
