A number of early books by the Bronte sisters will be offered for sale in a forthcoming Library Sale at Cambridgeshire auctioneers Cheffins on April 27.
There will be seven lots in total within the sale, two of which are first editions Bronte books, and all come from one private Cambridge-based collector.
Two highlights from the collection are the first edition of The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Acton Bell (Anne Bronte’s psuedonym) in three volumes, published in 1848 by Thomas Cautley Newby. The book has an estimate of £6,000 to £8,000.
Elsewhere in the sale is a three-volume rare first edition of Wuthering Heights by Ellis Bell (Emily Bronte’s pen name) and Agnes Grey by Acton Bell (Anne Bronte’s pen name). Published by Thomas Cautley Newby in 1847, the Agnes Grey title has been repaired at the gutter and some leaves have been supplied from a shorter (later) copy. The trio is described as having a little age and dust toned with the off finger mark. The estimate is £10,000 to £20,000.
