Roseberys are presenting a sale of Prints & Multiples that boasts works by or depicting celebrities and stars. Head of Department Ed Plackett said of the upcoming auction, “from a beautiful selection of Andy Warhol and Bob Dylan prints to incredible examples from Damien Hirst and Tracey Emin, as well as a lovely collection of L.S. Lowry and Howard Hodgkin works, we are delighted to be presenting an alluring assortment of prints and multiples to the market on March 7. There is something for everyone in this sale. We encourage you to take a look and find what it is that piques your interest!”
The solo standout lot of the auction is Lot 97, a coloured screenprint on Arches Aquarelle paper by Andy Warhol depicting the Rolling Stones’ frontman Mick Jagger. The work is signed and numbered 91/250 in pencil by the artist, and signed again in black felt-tip pen by Jagger. The total edition includes 50 artist proofs and three printer’s proofs, and was printed by Alexander Henrici in New York and published by Seabird Editions in London in 1975. Warhol worked with and captured Jagger and the Rolling Stones several times, having met the then relatively unknown band in 1964 and being commissioned to design their scandalous Sticky Fingers album cover 7 years later. This piece is pre-framed and comes to auction with an estimate of £80,000 – £100,000.
Another lot by Warhol, Lot 98, is also a highlight coming to sale this March. The screenprint in colours on wove shows a classic Warhol image – canned Campbell’s goods. The print shows ‘Oyster Stew from Campbell’s Soup II’ and was produced in 1969, printed by Salvatore Silkscreen Co. Inc., and published by Factory Additions, both in New York. The work is signed in ink on the reverse, is pre-framed, and measures 88.9 x 58.4 cm. The estimate for lot NUMBER is £30,000 to £40,000, and the piece is an ideal addition to any collector seeking a quintessentially ‘Warhol’ work.
Lot 441 is a work by British street art legend Banksy, and comes to auction with an estimate of £30,000 to £50,000. The original image from which the 2004 edition of 600 prints were produced was first made by Banksy in 2002, when he stencilled a graffiti mural of two of the lead characters of Quentin Tarentino’s film Pulp Fiction on the underpass of Old Street underground station in London. The guns held by John Travlta and Samuel L. Jackson in the 1994 cult classic movie have been replaced for bananas, in a typical Banksy switch. The original artwork was painted over by authorities in the capital in 2007.
Two works by creatives not necessarily primarily associated with visual art are lot 136 and 117. Lot 136 is a set of four hand-signed limited edition silkscreens by the actor Johnny Depp, entitled ‘Four Friends & Heroes’. These works are from Depp’s debut artistic collection, and each work is a portrait of an actor or creative who has inspired him. The four portraits show Elizabeth Taylor, Bob Dylan, Al Pacino, and Keith Richards. Each print is hand-signed and embossed with Depp’s ‘Bunnyman’ logo.
Lot 136 comes with an estimate of £18,000 to £25,000. Lot 117 is a set of 10 works by Nobel Prize-winning musician Bob Dylan. The works from Dylan’s ‘Mondo Scripto’ series come to Roseberys in their original box and have an estimate of £20,000 to £30,000.
Another highlight lot comes from the British Pop Artist David Hockney. Lot 218, ‘Gorge d’Incre’ from ‘Some More New Prints’ (1993) is a pre-framed piece measuring 53 x 64 cm, signed, dated, and numbered (44/68) by the artist. The lithograph and screenprint on Arches 88 wove has an estimate of £15,000 to £20,000. The piece shows a landscape in a new imagined way, classic for the artist who has had several museum shows of his boundary-pushing landscape and woodland scene works.
Lot 391 is ‘First Look’, a 2021 work by the Spanish artist Javier Calleja. ‘First Look’ is a soft ground print & etching on 300gr off-white Arches Velin paper, signed in pencil and featuring a Gravura Taller de Grabado blindstamp. The artist’s unique approach to portraiture has brought him international recognition, and his secondary-market value record reached over $1 million for the first time in 2021. ‘First Look’ was released in three editions (of 70) in June 2021, each one showing a different composition. The work comes unframed but in an original box including an Avant Arte Tote bag and gloves. The 80 x 60 cm work comes with a £12,000 to £15,000 estimate.
A final highlight of the March 7th Prints & Multiples auction is lot 348, a lithograph by the YBAs star Tracey Emin. The work ‘Hurt Heart’ 2022 is printed on Somerset Velvet Warm White 400gsm paper and is signed, dated, titled, and numbered (29/50). The unframed print was produced by Margate: Counter Editions last year, for whom the print was exclusively made. 10 portraits were made for Counter Editions in 2021 to coincide with ‘A Journey To Death’ – a solo exhibition of new prints, large-scale monotypes, and bronze sculptures by Tracey Emin at Carl Freedman Gallery. ‘Hurt Heart’ has an estimate of £8,000 to £12000 and is sure to be popular.
