Alfies Antique Market hits the right notes

The musical heritage of one of London’s most iconic antiques destinations is being revived by the next generations of its family owners.

Alfies Antique Market, one of the capital’s last remaining multi-floor antique markets, was originally founded a half-century ago by Alfie Gray, a former dance band drummer and entrepreneur. When he finally decided to put his sticks down, he set about converting a former haberdashery department store named Jordans in Church Street, Marylebone, into Alfies Antique Market. Today, 50 years on, his grandson Eric and great-grandson Josiah have formed their own band called Grays Blues to carry on Alfie’s tradition.

Every Saturday, the market’s much-loved rooftop cafe comes alive with music amid the bustling atmosphere of the various dealers’ areas. This latest entertaining chapter adds a soulful ambience for shoppers and exemplifies the way Alfies has embraced both its musical and antique roots for nearly five decades.

Alfie’s son, Benny Gray, the current owner of the business, explained that his father was one of eight siblings, all of whom played the drums, the fiddle and also tap-danced professionally. “I tried hard to follow this musical family tradition but failed dismally, and I still feel a bit guilty about that. So, I’m really pleased that with Gray’s Blues, my son and grandson are beginning to succeed where I failed—they certainly have the talent,” he said. “I’m also pleased that the new Saturday afternoon gigs at the Alfies Rooftop CafĂ© are already gathering fans, especially among the dealers. Plus, atmospherically, the blues seem to match well with vintage clothing and 20th-century antiques.”

With four floors filled with antiques, collectibles and rare finds, Alfies remains a vibrant fixture in London for antique and vintage lovers, and its commitment to community and culture will be on full display at the upcoming Alfies Christmas Party on December 7. The all-day event will feature magicians, tarot card readers, festive drinks and a celebratory atmosphere surrounding the dealers’ collections – a perfect occasion to highlight the market’s spirit.
