Silver lighthouse looks set to shine
On Saturday 12th December, Tennants Auctioneers Jewellery, Watches and Silver sale offers a very unusual opportunity to purchase your very own lighthouse. Not the bricks and mortar kind but debatably more excitingly, a chance to bid for a very rare Provincial Silver Lighthouse Sugar Caster, Thomas Havers, Norwich 1689.
Silver was assayed in Norwich during three periods between 1565 and 1702, where a wide range of domestic and church plate was produced. Norwich Museum holds the only important public collection in existence, with the majority being secular and Norwich Castle’s private collection includes the only known survival of some forms and examples of work of all the major makers, including Thomas Havers.
This rare example, with a beautifully pierced high dome cover and bayonet fitting, depicting a typical ‘lighthouse’ silhouette, includes a floral design added in the 19th century, is estimated at £300 to £500.
