Print sale has strong demand
Essex auction house Sworders saw an eclectic range of buyers and collectors taking part in its recent 500 Years of Printmaking sale, with demand for Modern British prints evident.
Highlights from sale included contemporary woodcuts by Japanese artist Yoshimoto Nara (left), selling for £9800, alongside a set of Pablo Picasso coloured lithographs entitled The Collection of Small Pictures (below right), which sold for £8000.
Also in the sale, a handmade print in colours executed on an office copier by David Hockney, entitled Red Flowers and Green Leaves, Separate, May, fetched £4700, while a Paul Nash lithograph printed in colours, Landscape of the Megaliths, sold for £1550.
Specialist Shane Xu noted the strong demand for Modern British prints, while welcoming the depth in bidding for works from Europe and beyond across the 20th and 21st centuries.
Shane commented on the sale and its organisation, “This is the culmination of years of work and study, building up detailed knowledge of artists and the market, while focusing on what buyers and sellers want on an international basis. I am really looking forward to building my own department within Sworders, who are among the leading UK auction houses, with a global outlook.”
