The rare set of proof coins from the Royal Mint to mark Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee in 1887

Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee, celebrated on June 20, 1887, brought together 50 European kings and other royalty to honour her at a banquet, while the Queen herself undertook several engagements, and greeted the cheering crowds from the balcony of Buckingham Palace.

The occasion also provided the Royal Mint with the opportunity to produce a British Royal Mint proof set – its first since the sovereign to half-farthing set of 1853. Comprising four gold coins (five pounds, two pounds, one sovereign and half sovereign), and seven silver coins (one crown, four shillings, half crown, florin, shilling, sixpence and threepence), the set has a combined face value of nine pounds, four shillings and threepence. Less than 800 of these sets were struck.

A fine example of this limited edition set, it was presented in its original case of issue at the recent sale.
