Mouseman chairs attract interest

Lawrence’s auctioneers in Somerset are selling an unusual set of ‘Mouseman’ elbow chairs.

The chairs, consigned for sale from a local clearance, were made by the famous furniture maker, Robert Thompson of Kilburn. Thompson (1876 to 1955) set up a business making oak items which always carried his distinctive signature of a carved mouse.

Thompson was best known for making hand-crafted furniture but he also made other items, such as candlesticks, candle boxes, ashtrays and lamp bases. The business still thrives to this day.

The pair of chairs has solid panel backs and leather covered seats, and both have the sought-after carved mouse on one of their legs. Standing 84cms high, they have remained in generally untouched condition.

lawences Auctioneer, Simon Jones, said, “Mouseman always attracts interest at auction and there are a huge number of collectors for their work with prices remaining strong.

The auction takes place on July 16th and the chairs have an estimate of £500.
