Lowry artworks make high prices at Duke’s
An oil on board painting by the artist Laurence Stephen Lowry has doubled its pre-auction estimate to fetch £201,300 in Duke’s Painting and Furniture sale in Dorchester, Dorset.
The artwork, entitled Young Lady Hurrying is little more than the size of an A4 piece of paper, belongs to a small group of single figure studies produced by Lowry on a plain background. The small oil painting, bearing the all important Lowry signature and dated 1968, depicts a full length side profile of a young girl walking against a cold Northern wind with head bowed, wearing a black coat with red hood and hem and baring slender long legs.
A pencil drawing by Lowry, entitled Queen’s Dock, Glasgow, signed by the artist and dated 1946, also reached an impressive sale price, with bidding ending at £48,800.
