Churchill cigar set to light up auction
As icons go it looks like it could still be a little soggy at one end, has definitely been chewed, but is set to make between £500-£1000 at Duke’s Auctioneers on 15th October.
A cigar butt, chewed and smoked by Sir Winston Churchill, contained in a paper Middlesex Hospital Soiled Dressing Disposal Bag was acquired by the vendor’s student nurse sister. He had asked her to collect one for him to add to his childhood collection of novelties. She managed to get the cigar from Churchill’s bedside at Middlesex Hospital only three years before his death.
It was put in the Soiled Dressing Disposal Bag and has been preserved in this state since 1962.
