Awards announced at Winter Art and Antiques Fair
Clock specialist Howard Walwyn scooped BADA’s ‘best stand’ award at the Winter Art and Antiques Fair Olympia yesterday, while LAPADA awarded its gong to Derbyshire-based country oak specialist Peter Bunting Antiques.
The panel of three judges included interior designer Caroline Paterson, Antique Collecting magazine editor Georgina Wroe and Georgina Gough, from The Worshipful Company of Arts Scholars.
All three were wowed by not only the quality of the pieces on display at Howard Walwyn’s stand, but the sense of intimacy he had evoked using targeted lighting and dark backgrounds.
The judges also applauded Peter Bunting’s juxtaposition of old and modern on his stand, which showed off both the versatility and beauty of period oak.
Caroline Paterson said: “One word screamed at us when we saw Howard’s stand – quality. The clocks were stunning and the way he showed them off to their best advantage was incredible.”
Referring to Peter Bunting’s display, Georgina Wroe said: “We are a huge fan of country oak at the magazine and when you see Peter’s stand you can understand why. He also paired old oak with modern art showing how versatile the style can be in interiors.”
Meanwhile the LAPADA award for best use of display cabinets went to Perthshire-based Decorative Arts @ Doune, while the BADA award for the same category was awarded to 20th-century design specialist Matthew Foster, trading as Art Deco Gallery London, based in Mayfair.
Shrewsbury-based Callaghan Fine Paintings scooped the LAPADA award in the category ‘best hung pictures and textile’, while the BADA award went to London and Jersey-based 17th-20th-century specialists Atelier.
BADA secretary general Mark Dodgson said: “As ever we were thrilled by the quality of our member’s stands. Their initiative and design flair is one factor that helps make the show such a popular event.”
LAPADA’s chief executive, Rebecca Davies said: “Well done to all our members. Many made a competitive short list across the categories.”
The Winter Art and Antique Fair Olympia continues until November 5.
Howard Walwyn’s stand is E12, Peter Bunting is on Stand B1, Atelier can be found at Stand A9, Callaghan Fine Paintings is on Stand E23, Decorative Arts @ Doune in on Stand J4 and Matthew Foster, trading as Art Deco Gallery London can be found at Stand D30.
