British studio pottery in Cotswolds sale
Two important collections of British studio pottery will be part of a modern and contemporary art and design sale at Cotswolds’ auction house Chorley’s this month.
Dame Lucie Rie
Works by celebrated and sought-after modernist potter Dame Lucie Rie (1902-1995) are among the sale’s highlights. The items include a stunning porcelain vase of tall, cylindrical form with flared rim, in a manganese and blue glaze with scraffito detailing, estimated at £15,000 to £20,000. Elsewhere, a porcelain footed bowl with yellow glaze and bronzed manganese dip rim, impressed with the artist’s seal is expected to reach between £20,000 to £30,000.
Lynn Chadwick
The sale also includes a work by leading British sculptor Lynn Chadwick, renowned for his innovative bronze and steel sculptures of abstracted and expressive figures. The Marquette V Walking Woman/bronze, circa 1984, has an estimate of £10,000 to £15,000.
John Ward
One of Britain’s greatest potters, John Ward, will also be represented in works including a stoneware tailed bowl, in a matt black and white glaze from 1995 estimated at £3000 to £5000, and a stoneware vessel, decorated with radiating concentric circles in green to a matt white glazed ground, impressed mark to base from 1989, expecting to fetch £5000 to £7000.
The sale takes place on May 15.
