‘Political giant’ Beaverbrook sale in Berkshire
An eclectic collection of furniture and works of art from Cherkley Court, the former home of Lord Beaverbrook, will be auctioned over the coming months at Dreweatts and Bloomsbury Auction’s Berkshire.
Lord Beaverbrook was a giant of the 20th century political world and his home, Cherkley Court, played host to many notable politicians, writers and musicians of the day. Regular visitors included Winston Churchill, Bonar Law, Lloyd George, Chamberlain, HG Wells, Joe Kennedy, Rudyard Kipling and Ian Fleming. Kipling’s wife also helped to furnish Cherkley Court.
The wider collection includes furniture and works of art – from all periods – collected by Lord Beaverbrook as he refurbished the house. Unusual highlights in the forthcoming sales include:
An Art Deco standard lamp- estimate of £300-500
A console table in 18th century Baroque taste – estimate of £1,000-1,500
A pair of glass pedestal urns & covers – estimate of £300-500
A walnut and walnut veneered bedroom suite – estimate of £1,000-1,500
An unusually large Regency giltwood convex wall mirror, circa 1815, 130cm diameter – estimate of £1,000-1,500
Still life with flowers in an urn by Margaret Delafield – estimate of £600-800
Model of a Bacchante by Aguste Puttemans – estimate of £800-1,200
Offered over four sales in February and March, the collection will be sold to benefit the Beaverbrook Foundation which supports a variety of causes in the United Kingdom and Canada, including preserving heritage buildings and supporting charitable appeals. The first sale forms part of the two-day ‘Interiors’ auction taking place on February 23rd and 24th.
