Portobello Road Market offers virtual trade

The world-famous Portobello and Golborne Market has held its first ever virtual antiques fair recently, with over 20 traders taking part.

The various traders took over the Instagram account @VisitPortobello, run through Kensington and Chelsea Council, to showcase and sell their wares to virtual visitors who could click through to find out more about products and contact traders.

The first of its kind event offered a unique online experience to those people who may not be able to get to the market.

Posting on social media prior to the event, Emma Caderni, specialist in antique textiles, vintage clothes and costume jewellery, said: “So grateful to @VisitPortobello for their continuing support during this time. Their reach to buyers both home and abroad will hopefully introduce us to a new clientele.”

The organisers of the event said open-air markets can provide a safer and more Covid-secure shopping alternative to enclosed, indoor stores and Portobello and Golborne market continues to invite locals and visitors from further afield. The virtual antiques fair offers another way to shop, particularly for international buyers or tourists who may not be able to get to the market regularly, offering a unique online experience.
